Our January speaker was Dr. Najma Ahmed, a busy trauma surgeon as well as an active member of Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns (CDPG). She was one of the doctors who treated the injured from the Danforth shootings in 2018.
Dr Ahmed believes a doctor’s role should include being an advocate for a healthier community, and she praised our club’s Gender-based Violence committee. The CDPG (which Dr Ahmed helped found) has had strong opposition from the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights.
The audience learned there are more suicides by guns than homicides and that women are predominately killed by guns. Sadly Canada has one of the world’s highest suicide and murder rates by guns.
